According to the wikipedia, Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) is a standard that specifies the formats for images, sound, and ancillary tags used by digital cameras (including smartphones), scanners and other image handling systems and sound files recorded by digital cameras. In digital cameras, JPEG, RAW and TIFF will have the exif data. Examples of stored information are shutter speed, date and time a photo was taken, focal length, exposure compensation, metering pattern and if a flash was used.

What is the function of the exif data?
For fans of photography, exif data is needed by them. With exif data photographers will find information about the techniques and settings in taking a picture. They can try to take pictures with same techniques and settings by other photographers. This will be a self-learning and increase skills of a photographer.

How do we know the exif data of an image?
Exif data can be read by several applications. The software that came with your digital camera lets you view the data. Other viewing applications include exif web browser plug-ins, photo editing and organizing programs and some printer drivers. The printer drivers use the exif data to automatically enhance images and can result in a better looking prints.

Now, some web applications that can provide information about an image exif data, among others: flickr, picasa web albums, and is now on google plus also provide information about an image exif data on their system.
